Basic Steps to Taking Care of Shearling Coats and Jackets

• Rule #1 - Never put the coat into a washing machine or a dryer! With few exceptions, most shearling products need to be either dry cleaned or "air-dryed". A trip through the washing machine and a dryer is a splendid way to kill a high-quality shearling coat product!
• Rule #2 - Frequent small cleanings are good. What this means is that you do not want to let dirt get heavily soiled into the jacket - as it can be very difficult to remove, if at all. Instead, clean the jacket soon afterit gets dirty.
• Rule #3 - Keep the jacket away from open flames or high heat sources! This not only will damage the shearling but can also damage the leather too.
• Rule #4 - Avoid prolonged exposure to strong sunlight - such as hanging the coat or jacket in a sunny windows for weeks at a time - as this can bleach out the jacket.
• Rule #5 - Long term storage. Do NOT use a plastic garment bag, as it does not breathe and allows moisture to get trapped. Instead, use a cloth garment bag that allows for air movement.
• Rule #6 - Give the jacket some space. Hang the jacket or coat loosely - not stuffed tightly among other clothes. You want it to hang naturally, not in some contorted way.
• Rule #7 - Speaking of hanging, always hang a shearling jacket on a hangar - a stout one. Never drape it over a doorknob or other round point like that (such as on a coat rack) unless the jacket specifically has a place that it can be hung from (most do).
• Rule #8 - When wet, just let the jacket air-dry.
• Rule #9 - Clean the jacket in the spring, and clean it good. Winter solvents and salt will accumulate on the jacket and, if not removed, slowly destroy the jacket. Clean in spring and then forget about it til next season.
• Rule #10 - Just say no to silicone. Silicone and shearling/leather jacket products don't mix.
• Rule #11 - Don't put adhesive stickers on the jackets, as the stickers - when removed - may pull out some of the fabric.

Summing it Up

After reading the above list, you may have come to the conclusion that a high quality shearling jacket may not be worth the trouble of owning. Truth is, a high quality jacket is very, very easy to take care of. And is incredibly versatile - functioning as a gorgeous day-use jacket, backwoods jacket and just about everything in between.

It just needs to be remembered that shearling is a different type of insulation than other fabrics - and thus requires its own unique brand of care.

What an experience, flew into Beijing China sunday, I could not believe how clean and beautiful the airport was. We drove to the hotel by taxi, a 40 minute ride, the cost was only $60 Chinese dollars ($10 USD).

The amount of new buildings that are going up is mind boggling. The construction goes up so quick in China, unlike the United States.

The hotel was almond marble, two people sweeping the floor of the lobby at all times.  

Many people, always smiling and always working at a quick pace. The streets were filled with gas and electric powered bicycles for transportation, but inspite of all of the two wheeled vehicles the traffic was bad. 

Pollution is a big problem in China. You can smell the coal burning electric plants as soon as you leave the airplane. This smoke odor and smog lasted the whole trip.

Went to the Beijing Leather and Fur Show at the Convention Center, not really organized, no name tags, just hanging badges to enter. Over 300 vendors was showing their fur and leather collection.

Some beautiful designs wer being shown and some not so beautiful I had to carefully go thru each booth and select what we can use for the 2012-2012 fur season. 

Problem, the furs were designed for the Chinese Market, sizes were small,  so I had to be extra careful to make sure the sizes can be converted to US standards.

During the day I wound up at an American Pizza Hut, The food was normal, I finished the meal and tried to give a tip, but the waitress said she could not accept. Not what i expected..

Fur was all over the place, every clothing store, billboards, men and woman wearing fur trimmed garments and virtually every fashion designer making fur coats and fur jackets along with fur trimmed jackets and fur trimmed for the Chinese market.

No Facebook, no Twitter, no netflix and most of the western type tv programming in China was cancelled by the government because they felt they were becoming to Westernized and losing their values and principles.

Felt great to be back home.

To Maintain the quality and life of a fur coat, cold fur storage is an essential part of the maintance required along with proper fur cleaning.

• 34-45° Fahrenheit is optimal, but any temperature under 55° is worthwhile.
• Humidity controlled between 45 and 55%
• Vermin and insect proof
• Theft protection (vault architecture, alarms, guards or other methods)
• Minimal U.V. light exposure
• Ample space for each garment
• Easily accessible (you may want your garment for an event or suddenly cold weather)
• If your furriers storage facility is on site, it is always a good idea to ask them to see where your fur garments will be stored.

WHY “COLD” STORAGE?… A SCIENTIFIC EXPLANATION

The more time a fur coat spends in cold storage, the better. Please note the word “COLD”. Storing a fur at room temperature negates the most important benefit of fur storage. If a storage facility is kept at room temperature or warmer, then you should consider looking for another facility that meets the temperature and humidity standards.
This is why… as temperature decreases (gets colder) molecules slow down. In biological materials, the less molecular activity, the slower the biodegradation process. One may ask “Why not just freeze it?” You may think that would suspend your fur in time, and this is true. But, if we think back to 5th Grade science class, we remember that when water freezes, it expands. When freezing and thawing is repeated season after season the expansion and contraction stresses, stretches and tears the material on a molecular level and actually speeds up deterioration. The same concept is demonstrated on city streets every spring thaw when pot holes appear. Also, frozen materials become brittle, risking cracking and breakage

This same principle applies to the natural oils in fur and leather materials that keep them soft and pliable. Colder temperatures slow down the evaporation of these necessary oils in your fur garments. Once the oils are depleted from fur or leather it can tear as easily as tissue paper.
With the understanding that colder temperatures protect fur and leather materials against deterioration and drying (as long as there is no risk of freezing), the experts advise that any temperature under 55°F is worthwhile and temperatures of less than 45°F are considered especially valuable to the preservation of fur and leather materials, with effectiveness increasing as temperatures decrease.
Note: It is always a good idea to ask your furrier to see their storage vaults, assuming they are on-site (see below “About Storage Facility Locations). Remember, you are the customer giving them your hard-earned money, you have every right to ask and they should be pleased to oblige you.

THE IMPORTANCE OF HUMIDITY CONTROL

Humidity level is important when a fur will be hanging in one place for a significant amount of time. If the humidity is too low (dry air) the natural oils in the pelts will evaporate more rapidly causing the garment to become dry and deteriorate. If the humidity is too high (damp air) they pelts can rot at a fast rate.
